TIE ME TO THE MAST I have listened I have learned I have tried to discern But there is one thing that I may never know Love is near then it is far It’s deep below then like a tower And I can never seem to make it stay So tie me to the mast And set those fog bells ringing Because I don’t want to hear A voice that’s always singing I have looked and I have seen I have tried to believe That there is nothing to keep me from the truth But it always seems to move Like a pendulum from its root And my perspective distorts the clearer view So tie me to the mast And set those fog bells ringing Because I don’t want to hear A voice that’s always singing

DOOMED EXPEDITION Starry eyed Slate bellied sky Wind burnt lips Whisper on the earth as fire Where is it now This mystery and wonder Trembling and hysteric Like the wind upon the water Storied eye Sun blinded sky The face of the deep Shallow it lies Under prodigal sun Newly setting sun It keeps heading west Like a man on the run Staring eye Earth beneath the sky Sun behind the moon The occult of son and father How can it be known Or once again remembered When the night moves on toward dawn Like some doomed expedition

// there are strange circumstances in which you find your way into my mind this morning I woke and opened my eyes to snow that wasn't quite falling but moving casually like peripatetic philosophers or a phantom ship or riderless horse on a scrolling vertical migration this is the way a memory will enter my mind by some arcane path or disparate analog taking impossible steps across a devil's bridge delicately proffered between two points in time //
5.
BIRDS OF FORTUNE You and I we go together Like the Cuyahoga River and fire Foolishly fitted and doomed from the start Assumed abstraction couldn’t keep us apart I saw the birds of fortune Fall from the sky Like a hail of diamonds At the end of time And the mouth of the harbor It swallowed up the sea Without affected intentions Or claims of property Like a shipwreck That’s buried inside of the sea I keep my desires hidden in me The sunset It burns out Between the leaves of the trees And these eyes block out Much more than they see

SHOULD HAVE BEEN Should have been a sailor At home upon the waves Then nothing would distract me Like height or shallow graves Should have been a pilot Always above the clouds Where nothing would seem smaller Than cities and all their crowds Should have been an actor Living on the stage Where words are superficial Like expressions on my face Should have been a liar Where nothing is as it seems I’d tell you what you want to hear And be the man of your dreams

// harbored boats asleep in the sun hydrotroptes aligned buoyed above fixed anchors like the earth tethered to its star wandering in slow arcs floating unmastered built for nothing else with sails stowed bare masts sway together like a winter forest in the wind //

HEART LIKE AN ANCHOR You’ve got an old rusty blade In your razor still And each time that you shave You know that you will Cut a little too deep No matter how much you try And your mirror’s still cracked So it does you no good You keep seeing yourself As less than you should But you just keep on looking No matter how hard you try Is it better to be blind than disillusioned Or asleep at the wheel than awake and not moving Or is it all just the same to you You’ve got a heart like an anchor That keeps weighing you down And a head like a clock hand That keeps spinning you round And you’re tired and dizzy And can’t fall asleep where you lie And your eyes are like search lights With the bulbs burnt out And your tongue’s like a traitor Who keeps pointing you out In each word that you speak No matter how much you lie Is it better to be blind than disillusioned Or asleep at the wheel than awake and not moving Or is it all just the same to you

rivers 04:21
RIVERS Rivers wander aimless Like gypsies or wind And speak in dead languages Of doomed disciplines Their courses unfixed But determined and planned By unconscious desires And mantic diagrams We’ve lost all the cyphers But still look above Towards capricious constellations Now both deaf and dumb Their songs have gone quiet Or are too far removed From some innate perception No science can prove Mute and immutable And buried beneath A diverted river Whose name no one speaks Is a casket of silver, iron and gold The secrets interred within Only dead men can know Until I, Attila Awaken from death And rise through this water That grasps at my breath And pass through the firmament Beyond the sky As a countersign of history Or the password of time

PILLAR OF FIRE The sun set down At the edge of the ocean A stylite on a pillar of fire It's chariot persists Like an act of contrition And follows the dark stream of the sea In a never changing path of perpetual motion through the ever changing lens of the sky The arrows of the sun Point the westward direction And bend round the steadiest line The sun can warm but never illuminate The Old Straight Track to my heart Locked within These bones are like scaffolding Upon which is stretched my skin The template of time It traces my countenance Like a dark cloud obscures the sun Or mercury glass reflecting the form Of all I may one day become

// it is tremulous and hysteric and accurately forgotten in spectral pallor a false dawn or shade of the sun and extinct language lost in infinite anonymity like a bird hung motionless in a mayan-blue sky describing a lost history of the vault of heaven held in place bookended and framed like mock suns or parhelia between two points in space where the whole world is bound with secret knots //
